Radical honesty.

Warsaw-based artist and curator working across performance, moving image, sound, text, painting, and installation, using body, biography, and cultural iconography as material.

BIOGRAPHICAL DOSSIER

Simona Kasprowicz is a Warsaw-based artist and curator working across performance, moving image, sound, text, painting, and installation. Her practice draws on her own body, image, and biography, placing them in dialogue with religious iconography and popular culture. Across media, she examines how bodies and images are shaped, reproduced, exposed, and circulated.

Her recent works include the performance Shekhinah in Labor (POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, 2026), the feature-length essay film Fucking with Marilyn (2025), which received a Special Mention at the Hacker Porn Film Festival in 2026, and the solo exhibition I Just Wanted to Be an Icon (2025).

From 2019 to 2024, she was part of the Camera Femina Foundation, serving as its president from 2022 to 2024 and co-curating its programme. In 2026, she founded the Margin Center Foundation. Her work has been presented at institutions and festivals including POLIN Museum, the Austrian Cultural Forum in Warsaw, Galeria Labirynt, lokal_30, and Konfrontacje Teatralne.

artist statement
"My work begins where the body becomes public."

My practice begins with the body — my own, other people’s, imagined, reproduced, and archived — and with the ways bodies are turned into images, symbols, evidence, and spectacle. Working across performance, moving image, sound, text, painting, and installation, I use autobiography, research, popular culture, and religious iconography as materials to be staged, distorted, and reassembled.

I treat my own image and biography as unstable material rather than testimony. Personal experience enters the work through exaggeration, fiction, reconstruction, and repetition. I am interested in the distance between a lived body and the image made from it: how femininity is performed, how icons are produced, and how bodies become desirable, sacred, excessive, or disposable. Camp, sacred kitsch, glamour, and pop-cultural imagery sit alongside exhaustion, violence, desire, labour, and shame.

I return to the question of who gets to name, interpret, preserve, and circulate a body and its image. My work restages inherited images, contaminates familiar narratives, and disrupts the meanings attached to bodies, icons, and histories. I am interested in keeping the body unstable — resisting the moment when it settles into a single image or a single meaning.

// METHODOLOGY & PRACTICE5 OPERATING AXES

WAYS OF WORKING

Theoretical axes and operating principles guiding research, production, and collective engagement.

method_ref: 01

BODY AS ARCHIVE

The body carries what history refuses to hold: violence, desire, labour, exhaustion. I work with the body as a site where private experience and historical pressure leave material traces.

method_ref: 02

AFFECT AS KNOWLEDGE

Affect is not separate from thought; it shapes how knowledge is produced. Shame, longing, rage, and hunger become tools for reading experience and power.

method_ref: 03

QUEER AS METHOD

Queer operates in my practice as a way of resisting coherence, fixed categories, productivity, and closure. It allows contradiction, instability, and excess to remain unresolved.

method_ref: 04

POLITICAL INTIMACY

Power often works at close range. I look at how love, care, sex, rejection, and dependency become sites where broader social structures are reproduced, negotiated, or resisted.

method_ref: 05

AUTOTHEORY AS PRACTICE

Theory emerges from lived contradiction. I use personal experience not as illustration, but as a place from which concepts can be tested, complicated, and rewritten.
